Instagram Web: How to Use Instagram on a Computer

Instagram web is simply instagram.com opened in a browser. You can post, upload reels and chat from it; stories still need the phone app.

Instagram web is the browser version of Instagram: go to instagram.com, log in with your Instagram username and password, and much of what you do on your phone is there on a bigger screen. You can scroll your feed, post photos and carousels, upload reels and answer messages. A few things still belong to the phone app, stories above all. This guide walks through each task on a computer, using the computer instructions in the Instagram Help Centre as they stood in October 2026. Instagram reshapes its layout from time to time, so if a button has moved, look for the closest match.

Logging in to Instagram web

There is nothing to install. Open instagram.com in any browser, enter your username, email address or phone number with your password, and log in.

Two habits make browser use safer, especially on a computer other people use:

  • Type the address yourself. Fake pages that imitate Instagram's login screen are one way passwords get stolen. If a link in a message leads to a login page, close it and go to instagram.com directly.
  • Log out when you finish. A browser can keep you signed in long after you walk away. On a shared or work computer, don't let it remember your login.

Posting photos and reels from a computer

Posting from a computer follows the same path as on the phone, with Create in the menu on the left.

  1. Select Create, then Post.
  2. Choose Select from computer and pick a file, or drag and drop it into the window. Photos can be jpg, png or heic/heif.
  3. Choose the size of your photo and select Next.
  4. Use Filters or Adjustments at the top to edit it, then select Next.
  5. Write a caption and add a location. Under Accessibility you can write alt text, and under Advanced settings you can turn off commenting.
  6. Select Share in the top right.
Six steps to post a photo on Instagram from a computer: open Create, Post and Select from computer, pick the size, edit, add details, share
Instagram web accepts jpg, png and heic or heif photo files.

Reels start the same way: Create, Post, then Select from computer for your video. On the next screen, a slider under Cover photo picks the cover frame (or upload your own image), and a slider under Trim cuts the start or end. Then add a caption, location, tags and alt text, and share. Instagram allows reels of up to 20 minutes, but says reels longer than 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences, which matters if you're hoping to reach people who don't follow you yet.

Writing alt text is easier on a keyboard than on a phone, so a computer is a good place to do it. It describes the photo for people who use screen readers.

Messages on Instagram web

Select Messages on the left to open your chats. To start a new one, select Compose at the top left, choose one or more people, select Chat, then type your message. Add photo or video attaches a file from your computer. You can also open someone's profile and select Message.

One rule surprises people: if the person doesn't follow you or isn't connected to you, your message arrives as a message request and can only contain text. Photos, videos and voice notes have to wait until they accept.

What still needs the phone app

Instagram on a computer compared with the phone app: posts, reels and messages work on both, stories are app only, live needs streaming software on a computer
Stories are the main thing you still need the phone app for.
  • Stories. The Help Centre says sharing a photo or video to your story isn't available on computers, nor in mobile browsers. Stories are an app feature.
  • Live video, with a condition. On instagram.com, Create includes Live video, but it works through streaming software: Instagram gives you a URL and a stream key to paste into that software's custom RTMP settings, and you start the broadcast from Live Producer. As in the app, only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more can go live. If Live video doesn't appear under Create for you, use the app.

Getting more from a desktop session

A computer suits the slower jobs: writing a careful caption, checking several photos before a carousel or replying to a backlog of messages. If you post a photo or reel from your desk and want to see how it does with a little extra visibility, our free Instagram likes and free Instagram reels views work on public posts, whichever device you published from. Keep expectations modest: each package is small, Instagram alone decides how far a post travels, its rules frown on artificial engagement and outside numbers can drop again. Questions

Is there an Instagram website, or do I need an app on my computer?

You don't need an app. Go to instagram.com in any browser and log in with your Instagram username and password. That is what people usually mean by Instagram web.

Can I post on Instagram from my computer?

Yes. Select Create in the menu on the left, then Post, and choose Select from computer. Photos can be jpg, png or heic/heif files, and you can add a caption, a location and alt text before you share.

Can I post a story from Instagram web?

No. The Instagram Help Centre says sharing a photo or video to your story isn't available on computers or mobile browsers. Use the Instagram app on your phone or tablet.

Can I go live from a computer?

Yes, but only with streaming software. On instagram.com, Create offers Live video, which gives you a URL and stream key to enter in your streaming software. You need a public account with 1,000 followers or more.

Why can't I send a photo to someone in Instagram web messages?

If the person doesn't follow you or isn't connected to you yet, your message arrives as a request and can only contain text. Photos and videos become possible once they accept the request.
