To turn off active status on Instagram, go to your profile, tap Menu, open Messages and story replies, tap Show Activity Status and switch it off. After that, the accounts you follow and the people you message no longer see a green dot or a “last active” time next to your name. There is one catch: while your status is hidden, you can't see anyone else's either. The steps and labels below come from the Instagram Help Center, checked on 3 October 2026. If a label in your version of the app reads slightly differently, pick the closest match.
What Activity Status shows, and to whom
Activity Status is Instagram's online indicator for messaging. When it is on, a green dot or a timestamp showing when you were last active appears next to your profile picture in Instagram messaging. In the inbox, Instagram's own examples include “Active 25 m ago” and “Active yesterday”. Inside an open conversation it can be more specific and show that someone is “in the chat” or “in the camera”.
It is not shown to the whole of Instagram. The Help Center limits it to the accounts you follow and anyone you message. In other words, the people most likely to notice it are the ones you talk to, which is usually why people want to switch it off: to read messages in peace without signalling that they are around.
How to turn off active status on Instagram in the app
The path is the same on Android and iPhone:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show Activity Status.
- Turn off the switch next to Show Activity Status.
To show your status again later, return to the same screen and turn the switch back on.

On a computer or in a mobile browser
On instagram.com, click More, then Settings. Below How others can interact with you, click Messages and story replies, then Show Activity Status, and turn the switch off. The Help Center lists the same setting for the Android, iPhone and iPad apps, Instagram Lite, computers and mobile browsers, so you can change it wherever you happen to be signed in.
If you switch between several accounts, open this screen from each one and check the switch there. It takes a few seconds and saves you from assuming an account is hidden when it isn't.
The trade-off: hiding yours hides theirs
Instagram treats Activity Status as a two-way setting. In the Help Center's words, when you turn it off, “you won't see when accounts who follow you or accounts that you have direct conversations with are active, were recently active or currently active in the same chat as you”, and you also lose sight of everyone else's Activity Status. The article on seeing who's active says the same thing from the other side: you only see when someone was last active if you both have the setting on.
This has a practical side effect. If a friend's green dot suddenly vanishes, it does not prove that they blocked you or hid their status. Check your own switch first; if you turned yours off, every dot disappears at once.

What the switch does not hide
Activity Status covers one thing: whether you are, or recently were, online. Two other signals work on their own rules.
- “Seen” under a message. That label is a read receipt, and it has a separate switch. For all chats, it sits on the same Messages and story replies screen as Show read receipts. For a single chat, tap the chat name at the top, open Privacy and safety and turn off Read receipts. Instagram notes that a choice made inside one chat is not overridden by later changes to the account-wide setting.
- Story views. The Help Center is plain about this: when you see someone's story, they'll be able to tell that you've seen it. Your name appears in their viewer list whether your status is on or off.
Common mistakes
- Looking in the wrong menu. The switch is under Messages and story replies, in the How others can interact with you group, not among the account or notification settings.
- Expecting full invisibility. Hiding your status does not hide read receipts or story views, as shown above.
- Forgetting the trade-off. If you rely on seeing when a friend is online, turning your own status off removes that view as well.
- Checking one account only. If you manage more than one account, look at the switch on each.
Your privacy and our free tools
None of this changes how the free Instagram tools on our Instagram page work. Services such as free Instagram followers or free Instagram story views ask only for the username or link of a public account and never for your password, so you can keep Activity Status off and still use them. They are small, repeatable packages; Instagram decides who sees your content, and counts from any outside service can drop later. If you want to know exactly what happens after you submit a request, the how it works page explains each step.
