If you're wondering how to hide followers on Instagram, the honest answer has two parts. Your followers and following lists can be hidden from everyone except your approved followers, but only by making the account private. The numbers themselves, how many followers you have and how many accounts you follow, stay public on every account and can't be hidden. This guide covers what a private account changes, what it leaves visible and the smaller tools for managing who is on your list. The menu labels quoted here were checked against the Instagram Help Centre in October 2026.
What can and can't be hidden
On a public account, anyone on Instagram can follow you, open your followers list and see who you follow. When you switch to private, Instagram asks anyone who wants to see your posts, your followers or your following list to send a follow request first, and only people you approve can follow you.
Some profile information stays public whatever you choose. Instagram's list includes your name, username, profile picture, bio, links, the number of followers and following, your avatar, your Threads username and any channels you create. This information is visible to anyone, on or off Instagram, and the Help Centre says plainly that it can't be hidden. If something there bothers you, the only fix is to edit your profile.

How to make your Instagram account private
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below Who can see your content, tap Account privacy.
- Turn on the toggle next to Private account, then tap Switch to private to confirm.
Two exceptions. Business profiles can't be made private, so a business account has to switch back to a personal account first. And if you're under 18, your account is private by default; teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to switch to public.

What a private account still gives away
Going private is not the same as becoming invisible, and a few details are easy to miss:
- Existing followers stay. Anyone who followed you before the switch is already approved and keeps seeing your posts and lists.
- Links to public accounts. Instagram's comparison table lists the public accounts you follow, and the public accounts that follow you, as visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads, even when your own account is private. One reason is simple: you appear in those accounts' own lists, which are open to everyone.
- Account suggestions. Instagram notes that people you follow or who follow you may be recommended to others when they view your account. The Help Centre says this can be turned off; on the web, the switch is called Show account suggestions on profiles and sits under Edit profile.
Managing who is on your list
If the goal is to keep particular people away from your list rather than hide it from the world, there are narrower tools:
- Remove a follower. With a private account, open your profile, tap Followers, tap the X next to the person and confirm with Remove. They aren't notified.
- Block someone. Blocking also stops a person from following you, and Instagram doesn't notify them.
- Clear out spam accounts. Instagram says accounts with 1,000 or more followers can manage and remove bot and spam accounts that follow them.
Be wary of apps or websites that promise to hide your lists while keeping your account public. The Help Centre describes no setting that does this, and anything that asks for your Instagram password puts the account itself at risk.
Before you switch: what private costs you
A private account protects your lists, but it changes how the account works:
- Discovery shrinks. Instagram's table shows that photos and videos from a private account don't appear in search results, Explore or hashtag and location pages for non-followers, and people can't download or remix your reels.
- Insights disappear. Private accounts can't view insights. If you switch back to public within 90 days, you can regain access to past data.
- Free services stop working. Our free Instagram followers and free Instagram profile visits need a public profile, because the accounts on the delivery network have to be able to open it. If you go private, requests for the account won't go through until it's public again.
If you keep the profile public, see those boosts for what they are: a small, free nudge. Instagram still decides who sees your posts, it takes a firm line on artificial engagement, and numbers added from outside can fall away later. The full list of free Instagram services is on the Instagram page.
